What is TDS?

One of the most important characteristics of water is its TDS level.

Natural sources of water (like groundwater, lakes, rivers, etc.) provide us with water that has lots of different organic and inorganic elements dissolved in it.

These elements include salts like calcium, magnesium, potassium, fluorides, carbonates, and sulfates and many others.

Water can also have heavy metals in its composition. They are harmful to human body and can make water completely unacceptable for drinking.

Moreover, people throw a lot of waste into water sources which adds more dangerous elements to water composition.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a term used to designate an amount of elements (both organic and inorganic) in a certain amount of water.

TDS include minerals, salts, cations, anions, and metals.

As it’s stated above, sources of the dissolved salts can be organic and inorganic.

Organic sources of TDS can be:

  • leaves
  • some kinds of organisms that live in water (like plankton)
  • silt
  • waste
  • sewage
  • road salts
  • pesticides
  • fertilizers, etc.

Inorganic sources of TDS are:

  • pipelines (from which water can pick up metals)
  • rocks
  • atmospheric gasses
  • minerals, etc.

What Water is Suitable for Drinking?

Water that contains a lot of salts is harmful to people. That’s why it’s so important to control the TDS level in the water you consume. The majority of the salts should be present in the drinking water as they are good for our health. But other salts and water contaminants are dangerous and should be removed from water.

TDS level measurement is expressed in units of mg per unit volume of the water ( mg/l). It can as well be expressed in parts per million ( ppm ).

The taste of water changes according to TDS levels.

As World Health Organization states, TDS level less than 300 mg/ liter is regarded as excellent for drinking, level between 300 and 600 mg/liter is good, 600-900 is fair, 900 – 1200 is poor and TDS level exceeding 1200 mg/liter is completely unacceptable.

There is also a range of TDS Permissible Levels made by The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It states if the water is suitable for consumption or not.

Less than 50 Water with such a level is not appropriate for drinking as it lacks the minerals our body needs for keeping healthy.
50 to 150 This level is not appropriate because such water is polluted.
150 to 250 Water with such a TDS level is considered to be the best for people’s health.
250 to 350 This level is also considered to be appropriate for drinking.
350 to 500 According to BIS, water with TDS levels up to 500 is acceptable for human consumption.
Above 500 and up to 1200 Any level over 500 is not appropriate for people consumption.
Above 1200 Water with such TDS levels is completely unacceptable and can cause serious illnesses for humans.

TDS levels in water can be measured by special TDS meters that can be found at medical stores.

Can Salt Water Become Potable?

In order to get rid of dangerous elements in water and to make it safe for drinking you should use special devices like water purifiers. Nowadays there are a lot of water purification systems that can make salt and contaminated water potable.

One of the most popular purifiers is Reverse Osmosis (RO). Almost every house has this appliance. RO water filters are perfectly suitable for removing dissolved salts and other hazardous elements from water.

It’s a very widespread method of removing TDS. A lot of water purifiers are based on the RO technique. The RO purifiers are based on the process that passes water through a special semipermeable membrane with microscopic pores that allow molecules smaller than 0.0001 microns to pass through.

The molecules of TDS  are bigger than the pores of the membrane, that’s why they are stopped and accumulated by it. RO purifying system is one of the best methods as it ensures complete elimination of TDS from the water.

The only disadvantage of this method is that it requires a lot of water. For instance, if you put 3 liters of water into the RO purifier, you will get 1 liter of clean water.

So, if you are going to establish a RO purifying system in your house, make sure that you don’t waste the dirty water from it. This water can be used for different household needs. Make the use of the system efficient and nature-friendly.
